The Airport Consortium continues with the strong growth of airport infrastructures, with new lines of business and promoting innovation in the aeronautical sector, such as HAPS stratospheric flight aircraft and being pioneers in Europe.
That is why on March 11, 2025, the ceremony to lay the first stone of the hangar and production plant took place. The event was attended by the President of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, the Minister of Development, Octavio López, and the Mayor of Teruel, Emma Buj, as well as the General Manager of Teruel Airport, Alejandro Ibrahim. The hangar and warehouse are made up of three types:
a) A gabled industrial warehouse with a ridge height of 23.10 metres, corresponding to the goods and production area;c) A main door box made up of a parallelepiped 57.10 metres high and approximately 70 metres wide.
Regarding the structural system, a continuous footing system is planned, as well as a spatial mesh system for the structure made up of bars, spheres, wedges and straps.
In addition, it has been designed so that it can be used for commercial aircraft maintenance, as well as the warehouse for logistics warehouses for aeronautical material.
In front of the east façade of the hangar, a platform is designed for the exit of the airship. This platform has total dimensions of 300.00 x 220.00 meters.
On the south façade of the hangar, a series of parking spaces for workers' vehicles are planned, as well as two parking spaces for helium tanker vehicles.
The company Sceye has shown interest in the future hangar and production warehouse for its European HAPS base of operations. This is a high-tech company, which has its headquarters in Switzerland and its main operational base in Roswell, New Mexico (United States), where it has already carried out several successful stratospheric flights up to 20 km in altitude.
As part of their planning, they plan to create a manufacturing, assembly, launching, tracking and control plant for zeppelins or airships, according to the preferred terminology, which will fly at an altitude of 20,000 metres. Likewise, it was indicated that the idea of the base at Teruel airport will be to expand aircraft for Europe and Africa and that it will generate 135 direct jobs, plus 540 indirect ones.
HAPS technology can be used to offer ultra-fast Internet connectivity and high-resolution images in real time for scientific Earth observation activities, as well as applications for environmental control, border control and security, telecommunications services, pollution control and forest fire detection, among many other applications.
This is a pioneering and unique infrastructure in Europe, classified as a stratoport, placing Teruel as a reference point within this Aerospace sector.
