"Today is an important day because we are laying the foundation stone for a much-needed expansion that will provide Teruel Airport with a larger terminal with capacity for more office workers, as well as a cafeteria and restaurant space to serve the growing number of companies operating here." With these words, the Regional Minister for Public Works, Housing, Logistics and Territorial Cohesion and President of the Airport Consortium, Octavio López, inaugurated the expansion of the terminal building, which is being carried out by the joint venture formed by Industria de Infraestructuras Ideconsa S.L. and Trauxia S.A. The contract, which was awarded a total of €1,590,244.58, excluding VAT, is expected to be completed within 12 months. This means the new, expanded terminal could be operational by the summer of 2026.
This marks the start of necessary work to optimize the building's operations. It will double the available office space and update existing facilities, such as a large-capacity hall for conferences, press conferences, and educational and outreach activities. "Doubling the terminal space is a necessity stemming from the strong growth that Teruel Airport is experiencing and the job creation it brings, thanks to the attraction of companies that are revitalizing the economy and the social fabric, acting as an economic and employment engine throughout the province, where 750 people already work," stated López.
Work is now underway to provide an addition to the existing general services building, resulting in an L-shaped structure consisting of two floors: the ground floor will house a catering area with a large dining area, and the upper floor will house new offices and a meeting room. The catering area has been designed to be independent from the terminal and consists of a restroom suite, a dining area, which will include a self-service area, a bar, and checkout counters, and a kitchen area with a washing area, a waste room with direct access to the merchandise entrance, a changing room, a pantry, and cold storage.
For the mayor of Teruel and vice president of the Consortium, this expansion responds to the unstoppable growth of Teruel Airport: "We are currently around 750 or 800 jobs. It is an airport that will continue to grow and, therefore, is a machine for generating employment in our city. This also helps entrepreneurs and self-employed workers in the city of Teruel, because the more people there are working, the more economic activity will be generated." Buj described this expansion of the terminal, which begins today, as "symbolic," because "the success of Teruel Airport means that all the facilities are growing," and noted that "for the first time in history, we are approaching 37,000 Teruel residents, and this is the greatest sign that Teruel is doing well."
GROWTH AND FUTURE INVESTMENTS
"The goal," Octavio López noted, "is to harmonize the services of Teruel Airport, the most important industrial airport in Europe, with its growth, so that it remains an international benchmark in its field and continues to gain in competitiveness and service provision. We are convinced this will continue to happen due to the interest it is generating among companies around the world that have set their sights on Teruel."
Therefore, regarding the arrival of future projects at the airport, the president of the Consortium expressed optimism: "We are continuing our transformation and continue to analyze logistics projects in Aragon and, specifically, for Teruel Airport. In the coming months, we will once again announce a significant investment in aeronautical logistics," Octavio López hinted.
STATUS OF WORKS
Regarding the rest of the works in progress, the General Manager of the Teruel Airport Consortium, Alejandro Ibrahim, highlights "the construction of the hangar and production facility for stratospheric airships, which has been underway for five months and has been certified for more than five million euros. The earthworks phase has been completed, with more than 800,000 cubic meters of earth, and the foundations are in progress and the structure has begun. Regarding the paving of the new Campa Phase V, the aircraft parking lanes are being paved, is 70% complete, and is scheduled for completion by the end of the year, with a budget of 12 million euros. The terminal expansion project has begun, and the design and construction of the aerospace R&D laboratory is currently under tender."
At today's Governing Council meeting, among other matters, the approval of the files for the external quality audit service, the Aviation Civil Liability insurance, and the Teruel Airport rescue and firefighting service was carried out.
