Teruel Airport and the Aragon Technological Institute (ITA) signed a collaboration agreement this Wednesday in Zaragoza for the creation of a research and innovation laboratory in aerospace technologies at the Teruel airport platform. The objective is to turn this infrastructure into a hub for international projects and investments linked to sustainable aviation.

The agreement, signed by the director of ITA, Esther Borao, and the general manager of Teruel Airport, Alejandro Ibrahim, is part of the regional strategy to strengthen business competitiveness through the decarbonization of air transport and the development of new technologies toward climate neutrality.

A commitment with a driving effect

The new laboratory will allow for the development of unique testing and experimentation infrastructures that complement the current R&D&I offering in Aragon. Its objectives include the creation of innovation services for companies located at the airport, the revitalization of the Teruel technological ecosystem, and the attraction of new companies, foreign capital, and talent that can settle in the province.

Furthermore, the agreement includes the joint preparation of projects to access strategic financing instruments and the creation of new services that will allow companies to reach the next level of technological innovation.

This laboratory will be financed thanks to the Teruel Just Transition Fund and the Teruel Investment Fund (FITE). These are key mechanisms for generating economic activity in emerging sectors and accelerating the energy transition.

We promote innovation and business competitiveness through collaboration.

With this alliance, the ITA and Teruel Airport consolidate a common strategy to promote sustainable aviation in Aragon. The new laboratory not only aims to be a research center, but also an engine of economic development, capable of attracting talent, European projects, and private capital to a sector with high growth potential.

"This alliance and the new laboratory are another step in our strategy, where we seek to extend technology to the entire region, create a strong business innovation ecosystem, and consolidate Aragon as a technological hub," said Esther Borao.

Along the same lines, Alejandro Ibrahim emphasized that "Teruel's airport platform is already a benchmark in Europe for attracting strategic investment and, through initiatives such as this agreement with the ITA, it is also positioning itself as a benchmark in the field of Aerospace Research and Innovation."
