TERUEL AIRPORT RECEIVES THE SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENT AWARD AT THE ARAGON ENERGY CLUSTER AWARDS

IMG-20241120-WA0015

Teruel Airport has been awarded the Sustainability and Environment Award by the Aragon Energy Cluster Association (CLENAR) in the third edition of the CLENAR Energy Awards. The award ceremony took place on November 20 in Zaragoza.

This award recognises Teruel Airport as an entity that shares the values of sustainable development, as well as a facility that promotes sustainable energy transition aligned with the 2030 Agenda, promoting elements of the circular economy and its alignment mainly with SDG 7 "Affordable and Clean Energy" and SDG 13 "Climate Action".

The award recognises the main activity carried out at the airport facilities, which is the recovery of materials once an aircraft reaches the end of its useful life, achieving a recycling rate of 92% by weight of the aircraft. In addition, land has just been granted for the installation of a new company that dedicates its activity to aeronautical recycling, thus reaching a total surface area at the airport of more than 160,000 square metres dedicated to recycling in the aeronautical sector, potentially reaching the figure of more than 20 recycled aircraft per year. For all these reasons, Teruel Airport is positioned as the largest European centre for sustainable reconversion within the aeronautical sector with HAPS and eVTOL aircraft.

Another environmental aspect developed at the airport is the commitment to clean energy, seeking self-consumption in its facilities through renewable energy. That is why it has been decided to opt for solar energy as a source of electricity, currently having the capacity to generate up to 600 kW and expected to reach 1.5 MW of its own by the end of the year. With this commitment to photovoltaic plants, Teruel Airport contributes to a reduction in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by opting for a green, sustainable and environmentally friendly airport model. In addition, a new car park has been built with photovoltaic canopies for employees who come to work at the airport every day. This car park, by having canopies with photovoltaic panels, allows for an increase in the capacity to generate clean energy in the facilities, as well as highlighting that there are 6 chargers for electric vehicles, thus promoting transport with clean energy, allowing them to be recharged in the new facilities created at the airport.

In turn, taking into account that one of the main activities developed at the airport is aircraft recycling, the consortium is involved in the following European H2020 projects related to the circular economy and aircraft dismantling focused on solving the end-of-life problem of thermosetting composite materials from the aeronautical sector. The European projects are BIZENTE, HELACS, VIBES and EOLO-HUB, highlighting the HELACS project which has recently received the Third Millennium Award in the Research and Future category in its tenth edition.

It is worth highlighting the 9001 seal distinction based on quality management and the 14001 seal based on environmental management, which are renewed annually in a satisfactory manner. Another of the great achievements of Teruel Airport in 2025 has been obtaining the Gold Seal of Business Excellence, reaching the figure of more than 500 points in the EFQM model, being one of the few companies to obtain this award in Aragon, and highlighting the high level of quality established in the entity, being a benchmark for the province of Teruel.

This year, the Aragón Circular seal has also been renewed for the next 2 years, as well as the RSA + 2025 seal, which has been obtained uninterruptedly since 2016.
