Octavio López celebrates Tarmac's success at the inauguration of the world's largest metal-textile A380 hangar at Teruel Airport

"Today we are here to confirm that the history of Tarmac at Teruel Airport is a success story." With these words Octavio López celebrated the expansion of the facilities of the company dedicated to the maintenance and recycling of aircraft, which today inaugurated its second hangar in which it has undertaken an investment of 15 million euros.

In 2023, the world leader in aircraft storage and maintenance, Tarmac Aerosave, approached Spantech to build an MRO hangar at Teruel Airport. This "ambitious project" required a facility with a clear span of 95 metres and a clear height of 29 metres, capable of comfortably accommodating an Airbus A380, the largest passenger aircraft in the world.

The hangar boasts several advanced features. Thermoroof technology uses a lightweight insulation material that allows natural light to pass through while ensuring the insulated roof covering remains airtight. The high-tech fire protection system includes fire detection cameras, extinguishers and hoses.

The Minister of Public Works, Housing, Logistics and Territorial Cohesion closed the event organised by the company in the hangar itself, which has a surface area of over 8,000 square metres and can accommodate an A380, the largest passenger aircraft in existence today. López wanted to acknowledge "what Teruel and Aragon owe to Tarmac, the company that in that distant 2011 submitted a bid to become the driving force behind a project that, time has shown, was a resounding success, decisively contributing to positioning this airport as a world-class industrial benchmark in the field of aeronautics".

Octavio López recalled the moment when Tarmac began its activity, in August 2013, with the arrival of the first Boeing 747-400 from the German city of Frankfurt: "The rest is a successful trajectory here in Teruel that we all know and that we want to continue and extend over time so that both the company and the airport continue to grow hand in hand and continue marking milestones in a symbiotic relationship that benefits both."

700 JOBS AND 60 MILLION INVESTMENT

Currently, Teruel Airport is undergoing a growth process, with ten companies permanently installed there that employ 700 workers and with works underway such as the new parking lot with a capacity of 160 vehicles that will be completed in a couple of weeks, the paving of the Phase III acreage and the expansion of the Phase V parking lot.

In addition, the production hangar for stratospheric airships is currently being put out to tender, with a starting value of 43.5 million euros, as well as a new paint shop, which, together with other works, represents a global investment of 60 million euros for the next two years. It should be noted that, to date, the Teruel Investment Fund (FITE) has financed works at the airport worth 105 million euros.
